Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing a beautiful family of five in Frederiksberg Have. The siblings were a sweet 13-year-old boy, and two adorable girls aged 8 and 5. The photos from this family shoot would be a gift for their Grandma, whose 70th birthday is coming up.

What to wear for a family photo session?

A few days before the session, Victoria, the mom, contacted me about what to be mindful of when picking the outfits for the photo session. As a general rule, I recommend that you coordinate what you’ll choose for the session. You can do that by looking for outfits that complement one another in different tones in a color family, and by ensuring a good mix of solids and patterns. Keep in mind that these photos should look timeless, so no big logos or accessories that won’t make sense in a couple of years. Having said that, more important than everyone looking perfect together, is everyone feeling happy, confident and comfortable in what they’re wearing. 

The photo session

During the photo session, I made sure to capture a range of poses and candid shots to showcase the family’s close bond. We started with some formal poses of the family together, then moved on to some playful shots of the siblings interacting and having fun. 

For me, one of the most important elements of any family photo session is ensuring that everyone is comfortable and relaxed. As a family photographer, I make it a priority to create a relaxed atmosphere where everyone can be themselves. The result is a collection of beautiful, natural, and joyful photos that the family will cherish for years to come, and will most definitely make Grandma thrilled.
